Day trip to the Falls!

March 20, 2009 at 6:39 PM (General) (, , , , , )

The other day my husband, two of his sisters, and I (Alexis) took a day trip to Fall Creek Falls State Park. A bit of an avid hiker, Abdul has been after us to go hiking somewhere for the past six months, and Fall Creek Falls, only a 2ish hour drive away in Spencer, TN, was the perfect solution (especially since the rest of us aren’t exactly capable of any week long serious mountain hikes at the moment..)

If you haven’t been there, and enjoy the outdoors, waterfalls, hiking, or even leisurely walking in pretty places- this place is definitely worth visisting!  If you want to take it easy, you can pull your car right up near the top of the main falls, and walk about 1 minute to the overlook, then you can decide if you’re up for the not too terrible hike to the base for an upclose (and wet!) look. But no, this would not do for us!! Bring on the 3ish mile hike- we want to see ALL the falls, get all the great views, feel the burn and all that!!

Cane Creek Cascades

So, from the Nature Center, the first falls you’re likely to see when doing the full hike is cane Creek Cascades.
From here you get to cross an old fashioned swing bridge that crosses directly over the Cascade! The bridge is pretty exciting (though Abdul’s sisters found it somewhat terrifying!!) as it moves while you’re crossing it or anytime someone else steps on it. It also has a limit of 6 people at a time!!

No worries, no one died in the making of this hike!  And the girls were able to put on a brave face when they reached the middle of the bridge for a picture. 🙂

There are several places to go off the main path along the hike to get a different view of the three falls and the gorge. After some minor rock climbing we got down to this point where the earth just falls away- it’s a spectacular view! Just don’t stand too close to the edge!!

After about a mile and a half of hiking, and lots of little side trips,  you reach the place where you realize you could have just driven here and gotten out of the car (why? oh why didn’t we at least bring some water with us? Doh!)…  But that of course, is for pansies!!
This is the main falls!

From this overlook you can down to the bottom of the gorge for a real upclose and personal view. Of course, we decided we really wanted to go off the beaten path at this point and play by the river!

Just so you know.. as perfect as this route looks, we decided at this point that perhaps we’d best go back to the path after all… 😉 And as much as I love my husband it was sooo hard not to hop on the end of that log and start jumping! Heehee!!
The foot of the falls!

Ahh, a nice damp spot for romance!! Everything was dripping!

That’s right- bring a rain jacket!!
The trip back to the car was really quite quick compared to the slow wandering trek out, which was good since our legs were turning into jelly and we were all in need of some lunch!
As soon as we reached the car we started grazing on all our car snacks- sweet, sweet chocolate covered pomegranates (our new addiction) !!!
In all, I highly recommend Fall Creek Falls State Park, and now is a perfect time to go (no bugs!!!) though I imagine fall is insanely beautiful there!

Studio/Retail Space for Local Artists/Craft Artists

March 18, 2009 at 6:55 PM (Adornments News) (, , , , , , , , , )

Adornments is looking to expand into The Loft at the Factory at Franklin

The Loft

The Loft

a lofted space off of the common area in the main building.

View from The Loft

View from The Loft

This space can be seen from the ground floor from many restaurants and shops and is directly across from the Southgate Gallery.  Our goal is to provide artists and craft artists with studio and retail space; providing the community with the opportunity to see artists at work and purchase artisan goods as well as a place for artists to work and sell their creations. We do want any artists who take a space there to actually be there regularly (not necessarily every day, but several days a week). In exchange for rent (price is based on the size of the studio space (5×5-10×10) that is desired ranging from $320 to $400 per month or more), we will provide the artists with the following:

1. Studio Space (artists will have access to their studio space 24 hours a day)

2. Advertisement in various publications (Tennessean, VIP Magazine, etc)

3. Advertisement on our website (Adornments-Online.net)

4. Retail opportunity- use of our credit card machine at no cost to the artist. (i.e. we will not take a commission for works that are sold by the artist whether the artist is present at the time of sale or not) The Loft will be open for business during regular store hours (most likely: Tuesday – Thursday 10am-5pm and Friday/Saturday 10am-6pm) and an Adornments staff member will be present to process any credit sales during those times (again at no cost to the artist).

In order to make this venture possible, we need at least four artists to commit to taking studio space there within the next month. If you are interested, please e-mail AdornmentsOnline@gmail.com with The Loft in the subject heading. Tell us your medium, how much space you think you need, when you would want to move in and start working, and please include a couple pictures of your work if you can. We do want there to be a variety of different styles and media so our selections will be based on ability of the artist to create on site, quality of work and diversity of the space (i.e. we won’t pick all painters or all weavers).

We look forward to hearing from you!

Church of Brian

March 3, 2009 at 11:07 PM (Laura's Wedding) (, , , , )

When trying to find an officiant for the wedding, Jim and I ran into a bit of a snag.  Our venue is not a church, neither of us attend church regularly right now nor have a priest with whom we are particularly close, so we were definitely looking for a more secular ceremony for our wedding.  However, the idea of having a random Justice of the Peace marry us was not appealing either.  We wanted our officiant to be someone who knows both of us, someone who is well-spoken, someone who would really add a special element to our wedding rather than just a means to an end.  It just so happens that we know someone who fulfills each of those requirements:  Brian.

Brian

Brian

From the time he was little, my brother Brian has had a way with words.  Sometimes a frustrating gift for a child to possess (just ask mom), Brian has made good use of it as he’s grown up.  Now with a Masters in Communication theory, working toward his MBA while he teaches communication, speech and English composition, Brian still speaks eloquently and with great flair when he wants to (and when does he not?!).  There is no doubt that he knows me (my whole life in fact) and he has had the opportunity to get to know Jim over the last two years so we are confident that he will not only speak beautifully, but that he will have something meaningful to say as well.  One thing  Brian is not, however, is a minister nor a Justice of the Peace, so how is it that we can have him do the honors?  The Universal Church of Life has provided the answer: free online ordination!  20 minutes online and you too can have the authority to conduct marriages!  Lest you think that we intend any disrespect to The Universal Life Church or its ministers, here is what they have to say on the subject of online ordination:

Universal Church of Life

Universal Church of Life

The Universal Life Church | ULC is the only denomination in the world that opens its doors to all, and welcomes all who ask to Become an Ordained Minister. We are non-denominational. We support a full spectrum interfaith ministry. Over 20 million ministers have been ordained online throughout the world. We make no religious hurdles, no hoops to jump through, no tests of loyalty, no rings to kiss and no fees to pay. The Universal Life Church represents freedom, and to have freedom you can not make demands upon individuals. In the Universal Life Church Monastery everyone is equal – the same level of greatness is enjoyed by all. We will be your personal minister/consulate and advisor, with your consent at no charge to you. We ordain all who ask and welcome you to the Universal Life Church Monastery Ministries. The freedom of being a Universal Life Church Minister includes the legal status to officiate marriages. Ordained ministers can officiate marriages for friends, family, and others. Some ministers get ordained to do it once, and some find love in being an ordained minister. They open up wedding businesses, as there is a certain level of sanctity and fellowship in having family & friends included in a wedding of your procession.”- quote from the Universal Church of Life website.

Who knows, maybe this will be a new career for Brian.  Either way, I get to have my big brother in front, my big sister to my left, my parents at my back and my Jim to the right- completely surrounded by my favorite people- how can that not be a good thing (at a wedding anyway-could get closterphobic if it were all the time ;))?

Wish me luck!
